I think it has flaws but the gambling/casino parts are on point. Tim Schaffer was clearly a big fan of this movie as there are many nods to it in Year 2.Ĭroupier (1998) - If you really like the casino and gambling in Grim Fandango, give this one a shot. Jazzy soundtrack, classy atmosphere, romance. For those who like the themes of death and would like to know more about the Mexican holiday.Ĭasablanca (1942) - Also one of the main inspirations of Grim Fandango. Jazzy soundtrack, moody atmosphere, witty dialogue, amazing cast.Ĭoco (2017) - Takes place on the day of the dead, very colourful and lively. It is pretty much as close as you can get to a movie adaptation of Year 1 in Grim Fandango. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) - Cited as one of Schaffer's inspirations for the game. I'm only recommending movies I have watched since I can't really recommend a movie I haven't seen.
For those of you looking for movies that have similarities to the game, here are some which I think share elements of Grim Fandango. As Tim Schaffer says in the commentary for the game, Grim Fandango was inspired by numerous movies, most notably film noirs from the 40s. I adore Grim Fandango but sadly I don't think a movie adaptation will ever happen.
